General information

Making career choices in a world flooded with options is no easy task. In a society where Science is having a tremendous impact in all facets of our lives, a career in Biology can open countless opportunities. In fact, Biology in its broadest sense has spurred a myriad of new career options at the interface with computing, space, environmental, health, physical, and social sciences among others. Those seeking traditional careers, such as Medicine and Law, will get a solid preparation in the "science of life." Not surprisingly, our department has the largest body of undergraduate students in the College of Natural Sciences and the campus as a whole. If you want to examine and compare our program with others offered at UPR-RP you can check the Catálogo de Programas Subgraduados UPRRP 2003-2006.

High school students interested in completing a B.Sc. in Biology have to apply directly to the University of Puerto Rico, and choose as their first option Biology at the College of Natural Sciences in the Rio Piedras campus. Once admitted, student’s have to take one year of basic courses offered through the College of General Studies and other academic units across campus, and then may start taking courses offered by different academic units of the College of Natural Sciences, including Biology. Alternatively, students that meet an additional set of criteria (100-Group) can bypass some of these basic courses and start taking in their fist year those offered by the College of Natural Sciences. Students admitted in other colleges at UPR-RP and that decide to major in Biology may request a reclassification. Those admitted in other UPR campuses and universities and that decide to study Biology at UPR-RP may request a transfer.
